Why Image Format Matters for Product Sales
E-commerce images do two jobs: they need to load fast (for SEO and user experience) and they need to show the product accurately (for conversion). The wrong format choice forces you to compromise on one or the other — or pay for unnecessary storage and bandwidth.
Marketplace Requirements
Amazon: Requires JPEG, TIFF, GIF, or PNG. The main image must have a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255). Minimum 1000×1000 pixels for zoom functionality. JPG is the recommended format.
Flipkart: Accepts JPG and PNG. White or light grey background preferred. Minimum 500×500 pixels.
Etsy: Supports JPG, GIF, and PNG. Maximum 20 MB per image. Recommends 2000×2000 pixels.
Shopify: Supports JPG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF. WebP is actively supported and recommended for performance.
WooCommerce: Supports all common formats. WebP works natively with modern themes.
Recommended Formats by Use Case
Product on white background (marketplace listing): Use JPG. White backgrounds compress excellently with JPG. Keep quality at 80–90%. Avoid PNG for white background images — they are larger without any benefit.
Product with transparent background (for use on any background): Use PNG or WebP. PNG is universally supported. WebP is 26% smaller and works on all modern platforms.
Product detail shots (lifestyle images, in-context photos): Use WebP for your own website. Use JPG for marketplaces that don't support WebP yet.
Product video thumbnails: JPG. Fast loading, universal support.
The White Background Workflow
- Photograph the product against any background
- Upload to ILoveConvert → Remove BG
- AI removes the background, leaving the product on transparent PNG
- Download as JPG (which fills transparency with white) for marketplaces
- Download as PNG or WebP for your own website
Image Dimensions for E-Commerce
Most marketplaces support zoom functionality when images are at least 1000×1000 pixels. The ideal is 2000×2000 pixels (or 2000 on the long side for non-square products). This gives shoppers the zoom detail they expect while staying manageable in file size.
At 2000×2000 pixels, a product JPG at 85% quality is typically 300–600 KB — small enough to load quickly but large enough for zoom.
Batch Converting Product Images
If you have hundreds of product photos to convert:
- Use ILoveConvert's image converter for individual files
- For bulk conversions, consider scripting with ImageMagick (command-line) or Squoosh (Google's batch tool)
- Keep the original high-resolution files archived — you may need to reconvert with different settings later
Naming Your Image Files for SEO
Image file names are a minor but real SEO factor. Use descriptive names:
- Good:

Separate words with hyphens, not underscores. Include the product name, color, and view angle where relevant.
