Normally, messaging someone on WhatsApp for the first time means saving their number as a contact before the app will let you start a chat — an odd bit of friction for, say, a shop that wants walk-in customers to message them with questions. A WhatsApp QR code skips that step entirely by encoding WhatsApp's own official "click-to-chat" link, which opens a conversation directly without either side needing to save a number first.
What's Actually Encoded
The QR code holds a standard wa.me link:

The number after wa.me/ is the phone number in full international format with no +, spaces, or leading zeros, and the optional text= parameter pre-fills a starting message in the chat box, which the person scanning can edit or send as-is.
Getting the Phone Number Format Right
This is the one detail that silently breaks the whole thing: the number must include the country code with no +, no spaces, and no leading 0. For an Indian number, that means 919876543210 — country code 91, then the 10-digit number, nothing else. Include a + or a stray space and some scanners will still open WhatsApp, but to the wrong chat or an error screen, because the link no longer matches WhatsApp's expected format exactly.
